September in New York

September is a special time of year. Up until this year, I always associated the month with back to school. That is probably because this is the first time I’ve ever not gone back to school in September. I’ve always spent a lot of September on Surfline looking at live feeds of waves throughout NY having their best days of the year. This was my first September at home where I could finally surf to my heart’s desire, and it was epic. So many named storms, most notably Hurricane Franklin, Lee, Nigel, and Ophelia. Here are some of my favorite moments from this past month!

A rare wave on Montauk’s coastline that only breaks on the big swells.

Ditch Plains. Our golden goose that still seems to work from 2 foot to 10 foot.

When the low light of fall and spring sets it, it can backlight waves making for some pretty awesome color.

Long period swell refraction.

Air 75°F, Water 75°F.
